What's a GagePort?
A GagePort is an industry-standard method of taking readings from a variety of different measurement devices or gages and then sending that data to a serial COM port on a PC. The data can then be seen on the screen and/or collected into software for further analysis or process control. GagePorts are used with GE's Proficy Shop Floor SPC software, and GagePorts are also highly configurable for use with other software packages or data-collection systems. GagePorts come in 2-port, 4-port, and 8-port versions and can be used with a GagePort Multiplexer to "stack" up to 32 ports at one station. That means that up to 32 different gages can be connected at once to any one PC using GagePorts. A GP-2104NT Digital GagePort is shown in the photo at the right.
There are many different types of gages on the market, and there are several different communication methods that gages use to "talk" to a data collector or PC. GagePorts were created to recognize virtually all of these and provide an easy way to collect data from almost any gage and send that data to a PC. There are a few different GagePorts available to collect data from the basic varieties of gages: Digital, Analog and LVDT.
The GP-2102NT (2-port) and GP-2104NT (4-port) Digital GagePorts are ideal for collecting data from just about any Digital gage on the market. Digital GagePorts recognize such gage protocols as RS-232, Mitutoyo, Federal Maxum, CDI, and Fowler/Sylvac. Digital GagePorts require Digital FlashCables to connect with each individual gage.
The GP-3102NT (2-port) "Combo" GagePort combines all of the functionality of the Digital GagePort with the ability to collect data from Analog gages with DC outputs such as LMI, column gages, and torque wrenches. The Combo GagePort uses either Digital or Analog FlashCables, depending on the gage.
The GP-0602NT (8-port) LVDT GagePort is especially designed for use with LVDT's and Half-bridge probes that are powered or "excited" by an AC signal and have an AC output. LVDT GagePorts also have the ability to take DC readings, although that application is less common. LVDT GagePorts handle two probes unless expanded to eight, and they come in a few different configurations depending on which probes are being used. Most LVDT's or Half-bridge probes will plug right into an LVDT GagePort, but some require additional LVDT GagePort Adapters. The GP-0602NT family of LVDT GagePorts and Expansion Units have been discontinued, but a few are still in stock, available upon request.
